6 famous people that died of the black death

The Black death, a sickness that killed millions of people. The Black death is a plague that was around from 1346 until 1353.

   When millions of people die, there will always be people within them that are famous. Those people were also human and incapable of curing from the disease. With that said, here are 6 famous people that died from the black death.

1. Joan of England

Joan of England
Joan of England was the daughter of king Edward III of England. She was a medieval princess and was raised at court. When she was 5, she travelled to Koblenz with her father so she could be raised there to form an alliance with the Holy Roman emperor. That didn’t happen and Joan was betrothed to Peter of Castile. While traveling to Castile, Joan was infected with the Plague and died before reaching her destination.


2. Giovanni d'Andrea

Giovanni d’Andrea was an canonist. A canonist is someone that knows everything about the law of the church. Giovanni was the most successful and most famous canonist of his time, the late middle ages. He studied at the university of Bologna, first Roman and canon law, later only canon law. In his life he was professor at multiple universities, had two daughters and had an audience with the pope. 


3. Ambrogio Lorenzetti

Ambrogio Lorenzetti
Ambrogio Lorenzetti was an Italian painter. He is on of the most famous painters of Sienese Gothic. His most famous work is ‘The Allegory of good and bad Government’. This work is one the most famous medieval paintings that is not to do with the church. Ambrogio belongs to the Sienese school and was one of the origins of the Renaissance.


4. Bonne of Bohemia

Bonne of Bohemia
Bonne of Bohemia is the daughter of king John the Blind of Bohemia. Bonne was almost French queen, but died just before her father in law. She was married at age 17 to the Dauphin of France. She had 10 children in 10 years with him. The rumour is that she was killed by her husband because she was disloyal, but she really died of the plague in 1349.




5. Alfonso XI of Castile

Yes, even kings died of the black death. Alfonso XI was king of Castile from 1312 until his death. He became king when he was only one year old, because his father died at a young age. Alfonso created a family quarrel by abandoning his wife and starting a public relationship with another women. After his death this resulted in one half brother killing-in the other and his wife executing his partner.   


6. Eleanor of Portugal, queen of Aragon

Eleanor of Portugal, queen of Aragon
Eleanor of Portugal was a woman that had two man fighting over her hand. It wasn’t for a romantic reason tough, the man we are speaking of wanted an alliance with Portugal. She ended up marrying Peter IV of Aragon. Her marriage didn’t last long tough, she died after one year at twenty years old. There is a little mystery about a girl that died in childhood. Some belief it was Eleanor daughter but it was most likely the illegitimate daughter of her brother, king Peter of Portugal.
